Helen Myland thinks that the nature of staff at Think Employment is the main reason why she’s still gaining new skills and qualifications.
After a positive experience interacting with one of our representatives in the Jobcentre, Helen has gone on to build on her existing IT skills and do two pre-employment training courses that will improve her chances of finding work during her time at St David’s Court, Leeds.
We spoke to Helen about her time in our learning centre, the new skills she’s learned and how far she thinks she’s come in just a few weeks.
Helen, can you remember when you first became aware of Think Employment?
Someone came to the Jobcentre and explained to me about the courses available at Think Employment. Whilst I was looking for work, I wanted to use the time to learn and gain new skills so it seemed like the perfect fit. I’ve ended up being very loyal to Think Employment because I really like the learning centre and all the people. Everyone from the staff to the learners are really friendly and very approachable. It feels like it’s a bit of a family and that’s what I like about it.
That’s lovely feedback. What is it about the staff specifically you like?
Right from the start they’ve been so welcoming and encouraging, which has helped to give me more confidence. I’ve been coming to Think Employment since the beginning of January but I didn’t think I would be here long after my IT Level 1 course finished. But the staff suggested other courses I might like to do that they could offer. I really liked the fact that they were helping me improve my skills further and get more achievements. Now I’m on the final part of the IT Level 2 qualification and I’ve also completed week-long courses in both Business Administration and Customer Service!
What made you want to improve your IT skills with us initially?
I already knew how to find my way around a computer but with me being out of the office environment for about two years I wanted to improve my skills. My thinking was that computers and software are updated all the time, so I knew I would benefit from some IT training. In my last job they used Windows 7 and here I got to use Windows 10 so that was good experience for me. I haven’t got access to computers at home so I wanted to do what I could, while I could, and take as much information in as I could everyday.
Did it shock you how quickly computers and software can change in the workplace?
Yeah and it also made me realise that when I was employed they only ever showed me what I needed to do to be able to fulfil my job. If I ever wanted to learn to do anything else, I had to ask another member of staff; but they never showed me, they just did it for me. Whereas now, after the courses that I’ve done here, I feel confident that I’d be able to sit down, work it out, and be able to do it myself.
Which of the skills you learnt on the Customer Service course do you think will help you when you go back into the workplace?
Definitely having a bit more confidence to talk to people face-to-face and over the telephone. What I learned about body language will help me in a new role and as a customer myself. We also learned about the rules and regulations you need to be aware of including Equality and Diversity in the workplace.
Tell us how it felt when all your hard work was recognised when you were awarded Learner of The Month?
It made me feel as though all my efforts where being noticed, even though I wasn’t doing it for that reason, but it was still really nice to be rewarded like that. It even made me join Facebook so I could see the picture that was posted! Now I get regular updates and information about training and jobs from Think Employment.
It sounds like you’ve achieved a lot during your time with us. How far do you think you’ve come in the last couple of months?
Oh a long way, definitely. I’ve not only been able to update my skills; I’ve also been able to mingle with different people from all different cultures during my time at Think Employment. Doing that on a regular basis, along with the friendly staff members, has allowed me to thrive and that, in turn, has given me confidence.
