Think Employment are running free retail training in January at our learning centre in Stockport. The course starts on 28th January and takes one week to complete. Throughout the course you’ll gain skills that are important for a successful retail career.
Why get into Retail?
Retail can be defined as the process of selling consumer goods or services to customers through multiple channels. There is a huge variety of jobs available within the sector including sales assistants, checkout operatives, storage operations and more! For some, retail is a great way to get back into a temporary job but many other people decide to pursue retail as a long-term career.
There are opportunities to move up to managerial positions and buyer and merchandising roles. It’s the perfect job sector for those who are looking for a fast paced working environment. The industry is constantly changing and adapting in order to meet customer needs so you’ll never have a dull day.

A job in retail will not only allow you to develop your skills but your confidence as well. What will you learn on the course?
Our one week training programme will give you all the necessary knowledge and skills needed for a position in retail. The course will cover how to provide excellent customer service in the retail sector. You’ll also gain an understanding of the business of retail and equality and diversity in the workplace which will be a fantastic addition to your CV. The course includes a Health and Safety in the workplace qualification which will further boost your chances of gaining employment.
Working in retail allows you to gain a variety of skills on the job so it can be used as a stepping stone for other career pathways. You’ll learn customer service skills, cash handling, stock management and order processing. These transferable skills are useful for many customer-facing roles including hospitality and customer service.
In addition, many retailers offer discounts to their employees and retail jobs often spike after Christmas due to January sales.
To be eligible you must:
- Be over 19 years old
- Have lived in the UK or EU for three years
- Be in receipt of a work-related benefit
- Or earn less than £15,700 per year.
