What are Functional Skills?

studying functional skills on a laptop
Functional skills are fundamental qualifications in English, Maths and ICT. Functional skills courses apply knowledge and learning to everyday scenarios, giving you the practical skills needed for your work and personal life. Many people study functional skills courses to get a place at university or apply for a new job if they don’t have their GCSEs.

What levels are there?

There are five levels of functional skills; Entry Level 1, 2 and 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Entry-level 1-3 are equivalent to below GCSE level, they can be the first step in moving up to a level 1 or 2 course. Level 1 is equivalent to grades E-D at GCSE and Level 2 is equivalent to an A-C grade. Level 2 is the highest functional skills qualification there is.

Why do I need them?

Many people use functional skills to get into university. Most universities accept level 2 functional skills as an alternative to GCSEs. (Always check with the university you are applying for). Unlike GCSE exams, functional skills exams can be sat anytime. We currently offer exams weekly at all our centres! No need to wait until term time.

Functional skills courses are fully accredited and nationally recognised. Employers also look out for them on your CV! It shows them that you understand how to apply Maths, English and IT to everyday scenarios.

Do I need to sit an exam?

Yes. All functional skills courses do have exams. If you complete your course with Think Employment, the exam/s need to be sat at one of our centres. Our centres are in Grimsby, Leeds, Hull, Stockport and Ashton-under-Lyne. (Social distancing measures are in place for all learners and staff attending our centres).
