A teaching assistant course is a great way to start your career in schools. It will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to work effectively with children and young people. The course will also give you insight into the day-to-day running of a school, and how you can support teaching staff in their roles.

This is a combined course with modules from our Level 2 Understanding Autism course and Level 2 Behaviour That Challenges course. We’ve chosen the course combination and units to help improve your chances of getting a job at a primary school, nursery, play centre and other settings working with children.

What to expect

You’ll receive two qualifications when you complete the course, a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism and a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour That Challenges.

This course is a knowledge-only qualification and does not require you to complete a placement or final exam.

  • You’ll gain an understanding of how behaviour can be perceived as challenging. You’ll investigate the underlying issues that affect behaviour and the impact it can have on others.

  • You’ll learn what is meant by ‘autism’, including autism theories and diagnosis. You’ll also look at common misconceptions associated with autism and conditions that can co-occur with autism.

What’s the average salary for a teaching assistant?

The starting salary for Level 1 Teaching Assistants is usually £17,842 in line with the local government pay scale. Level 2 Teaching Assistants can expect to earn between £18,000 to £20,000. Level 3 Teaching Assistants can earn up to £25,000 if they have additional specialisms or SEN responsibilities.

Do I need a placement for this course?

Our Teaching Assistant course is a knowledge-only qualification and does not require you to complete a placement or attend our learning centres as all coursework is carried out online on our easy to navigate portal.
